FYI…another ‘irony’ of History…..when Paul Revere rode through the night (April 18/19 1775) warning the citizens of Boston and surrounding communities that “the British were coming”…he was accompanied by William Dawes, another local patriot.
William Dawes direct descendent, Rufus Dawes, was Colonel of the 6th Wisc Vol Inf Regt that tangled with Henry Heth’s Brigade of A. P. Hill’s Corps on July 1st on the outskirts of Gettysburg. This Regt was an element of MG John Reynold’s 1st Corps called to Gettysburg by BG John Buford to check the advance of Heth’s infantry down the Cashtown road.
Later Rufus Dawes’ grandson, Charles Dawes, became VP of the USA.
Many of the fallen in “Harvard Regiment” are buried in Mt. Auburn cemetery incl. BG (Posthumous) Charles Russell Lowell Jr., Cavalry, who was also a kinsman.
John,
Great info, there’s so much history regarding Massachusetts and the Civil War. Mt. Auburn Cemetery is a “for sure” visit this fall. Thanks for sharing.
