Lincoln never failed to use his adroit Executive Eloquence, whenever Confronting Public Outrage, regarding his political policy or questionable constitutional decisions during the Civil War. President Lincoln had an innate ability to immediately address his critics and answer their concerns or personal inquiries. Abraham Lincoln felt that honesty and a spiritual truth were in the best interest, of not only the United States, but definitely the citizens, who depended on his integrity to lead them.
Examples of how President Lincoln addressed the United States;
“Perhaps a man’s character was like a tree, and his reputation like its shadow; the shadow is what we think of it, the tree is the real thing.”
“The legitimate object of government is to do for the people what needs to be done, but which they can not, by individual effort, do at all, or do so well, for themselves.”
“Stand with anybody that stands RIGHT. Stand with him while he is right and PART with him when he goes wrong.”
Lincoln knew that the longer he ignored what the public believed was a grievous wrong, the worse the festering would become. As President, he realized that eventually the roosters would come home to roost, on his own desk. The responsibility of whether it was incompetent generals, corrupt staff or self-seeking political cronies, was his alone and they were personal anchors that, had to be abandoned. Lincoln knew, that the sooner he was honest with himself, the sooner he could tell the truth to his supporters and the public at large.
Many Presidents have asked themselves before making, even the smallest of decisions, What would Lincoln have done?

Hm, just a coincidence you wrote this post this week with another president from Illinois having to respond to controversy? I think not.
Louis,
The “old guy” often wonders how Lincoln would respond to current controversy. From what is written, Lincoln often took his critics head-on and smashed their claims with honesty and integrity. Hope the present Chief Executive does the same.
