The Civil War began, well before April 12, 1861, between the territory of Kansas and the state of Missouri in 1854. These early conflicts regarded state rights in relation to slavery and the expansion in the new territories of that institution. When Lincoln was elected on November 6, 1860 a divide in the country was created that only a war could solve. Both North and South felt that their cause was divinely inspired and directed.
Another November 6 is upon our country and a philosophical divide is evident. The fracture that exists is greater in many ways, than any crisis in the last 70 years. A civil war will not occur after the election, however a hope that Americans will persevere in their search for wisdom, faith and unity will overcome the results, no matter who the victor.
Bummer
Abraham Lincoln reflected on God’s Will;
“The will of God prevails. In great contests each party claims to act in accordance with the will of God. Both may be, and one must be, wrong. God cannot be for and against the same thing at the same time. In the present Civil War it is quite possible that God’s purpose is something different from the purpose of either party – and yet the human instrumentalities, working just as they do, are of the best adaptation to effect His purpose.”
